Here is a video that I created called A Day In The Life. This video is part of a group on Vimeo that is similar to the My Day, Yesterday group on Flickr. What you do is create a video that contains a series of clips of different interactions and events during your day. The only rule is that the videos need to be edited down under 90 sec.
One of our new Christmas time traditions is to go to the Holiday Bowl Balloon Parade. It is the 2nd largest balloon parade next to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and set on Harbor Dr. downtown. A very cool parade.
I thought we were going to have light attendance being it was Christmas weekend, and holidays tend to be thin. I was wrong. We had a really solid day. People came today ready to worship.
Early in the week I got a call from my bass player letting me know that he wasn’t going to be here today. It is difficult enough to get a bass player on such short notice, but even tougher on a holiday weekend. After contacting every bass player I know, we ended up not finding anyone. Even though I don’t like taking Tim off of lead guitar we had him play bass. Of course he did a great job! It sounded nice and thick even though we only had acoustic, bass, and drums. BTW, Sean you tore up the drum mix. Wow!!
Here is what we did today:
Today Is The Day - Lincoln Brewster
Marvelous Light - Charlie Hall
God You Reign - Lincoln Brewster
Center - Charlie Hall
You Alone - David Crowder (1st service)
Everlasting God - Brenton Brown (2nd service)
I have had one of the most exciting, frustrating, rewarding, and exhausting days. Here is my tale.
I had an appointment this morning in North Park. As I was getting in my car in the garage I noticed that my door was unlatched. Not too unusual because I have been known not to shut my doors completely. I pulled out of the garage and reached up for the garage remote and it wasn’t there. I thought that was odd and looked in the passenger seat, but still no remote. I ran back into the garage to close it by the inside control. That was when I noticed that the case for my Line 6 pedal wasn’t where I left it, and neither was the case for my electric guitar. I ran out to look in the back of my car because that is where I left my acoustic. It was gone. I was also missing our portable GPS and an amp to that goes with my portable sound system.
I was bummed especially because I had no instruments to play, and I have a Christmas Eve service to play at tomorrow night. Fortunately I was able to bum a guitar from our friends Sean & Janae.
After starting the process to file a claim with our insurance company, the police sent out someone to take a police report. We realized that perps (I have never used that term, and it feels kinda good) had come through our garage’s side door. It was partially propped open because I had an extension cord running through the door to my Christmas lights.
I was resigned to the fact that my gear was gone, but I wanted to put some feelers out just in case. I posted an ad on Craigslist noting what I was missing and for to keep an eye out for it. Around 2p I went to Guitar Trader which is the closest guitar store to our house that buys used gear. I left detailed info. about my gear there as well.
About 5p I received a call from Jeff, who is a salesman at GT saying that he had my gear and the two people that were trying to sell it to them. Jeff mentioned that he would stall them as long as possible. Fortuntately it was very busy at GT, and the perps (here I go again, still feels good) were buying their stalling tactics. I immediately called 911. They quickly sent out a call to their officers. I told Candace, who I was going to meet at the gym what happened and we headed off to GT. My dad caught wind of this and met us there. When I arrived at GT there were police cars all over Clairemont Mesa Blvd., and the police helicopter blaring out a description of the suspects. It was crazy.
Apparently as the police showed up “on scene” (ok I am pushing it with the lingo), the suspects took off running. They chased one of them across Clairemont Mesa Blvd., and behind Kearny Mesa Ford where they lost track of him. The other women got lost somewhere in the shuffle, and wasn’t found either.
There are a few really good things that came from this day. I got most of my gear back even though it will be impounded for a little while for DNA testing. Also the car that the suspects used was stolen, and the owner was notified and was able to get her car back. Unfortunately it was hotwired which chewed up the electrical on the car.
Candace and I are now finally at home at 8:30p after being fingerprinted and having DNA testing done so that we can be eliminated from the prints and DNA on the evidence. The officer said that will the evidence found on the car and on the instruments, along with the great footage that Guitar Trader captured on their video survelliance, there is a good chance they will catch this guy.
It was a wild day that I will not soon forget. I want to thank Guitar Trader for all of their help. I was already a customer, now I am a loyal customer. Thanks also goes out to the San Diego Police Department for putting our tax dollars to good use. What an amazing display of law enforcement.
I don’t know if any of my worship blogmates have seen this, but apparently Catalyst is coming to California in 2009. It will be at Mariner’s Church in Irvine April 22-24, 2009. That is pretty exciting. This is a quicky on what Catalyst is all about:
Shaping Leaders in the Church
The core vision of Catalyst has always been to impact the next generation. By creating “change agents” throughout the church that possess wisdom and understanding, the opportunity is created to usher in the necessary adjustments to an ever-evolving church.
By helping these leaders grow in their leadership ability – Catalyst can have impact on an entire generation. We have a high belief in the impact that one changed life can have on another and therefore focus our efforts towards personal change with a community application.
Catalyst sees a need to ignite and unite the next generation of leaders allowing their passions and gifts to flourish and have maximum impact in our churches and culture.
Here are some of the scheduled speakers:
Andy Stanley - Northpoint Community Church
Erwin McManus - Mosaic Church
Brian Houston - Hillsong United Church
Craig Groeschel - lifechurch.tv
Perry Noble - Newspring Church
and many more…
Are any of you planning on going? Have you been to Catalyst? If you could attend only one conference in 2009 would this be the one?
Now, if we could just have Re:create come to the west coast.
We were busy today. For first service the band pretty much did the whole service. There was no message, just an extended time of Christmas worship. A worship marathon of sorts.
During second service we had our kid’s Christmas play, and it was awesome. I am especially proud of my kids. Matthew played drums (ok one drum) in worship for the first time. Like always his meter was solid!
Here is a list of songs that we used between the two service. Also check out our pre-service music as we attempted to cover Trans Siberian Orchestra with only four pieces. Tim rocked it!
Faith Noel (Pre-service) - Trans Siberian Orchestra

San Diego isn’t a place where it feels like Christmas in the traditional sense. We don’t have the snow (except in the mountains), or the bitter cold, but there is still a feeling that it is Christmas. The cool nights, Christmas lights, and our kids constantly asking us “how many more days?”. They all remind me that Christmas is just around the corner.
While the gifts, food and decorations are all well and good, I am also reminded again that this season is about God reaching down into our world and sending His Son. Not just as a baby in the stable, but as the Savior of the world. That this baby is the same one who died for our sin and rose again. He didn’t do this for a faceless mass of humanity, but for each one of us individually. Now that is love!
So this year I will enjoy the food, family, gifts but I also celebrate the One who gives me life.
