San Diego Burning #2

nl_dulzuraafter278804×008.jpgHere we are watching the news, like we have done for the past 48 hours. I never thought that this series of fires would rival the damage of the fires for years ago, but it looks as though they have. They are just now beginning to assess the damage throughout the county. Over 400 homes in Rancho Bernardo, 500 in Fallbrook have been destroyed, and these are initial assessments.

We have friends in Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Penasquitos, Escondido who were all evacuated in the last couple of days. I don’t yet know if their homes were spared or not.

We have many in our church family in Chula Vista who were affected by the Harris fire in the South Bay. The fire actually burned up to the cul de sac of our pastor . Fortunately it looks as though everybody in Chula Vista is looking good. The evacuation orders have been lifted, and they are being let back into their houses. The area affected is near the Otay Lakes Reservoir, which made for quick water drops from air tankers. Praise God for those big lakes!

Even though some fires are still raging, and a lot of damage has been, things are starting to look better. The Santa Ana winds are lessening, and we are beginning to get an onshore flow.

One other thing, I am so proud of our city/county. We are so blessed to live in a place where people care. They had to tell people to STOP bringing donations of food, water, diapers, etc… to Qualcomm Stadium because they had too much. This aid was not supplied by the local, state, or federal government. It was by the people in the greater San Diego area that saw a need and responded. At Qualcomm there was order and peace in a parking lot/stadium holding what they are estimating 20-30000 people. I am not going to bash the people of New Orleans during hurricane Katrina, but here there wasn’t anyone shooting at helicopters, trashing the stadium, etc… People were civil. Check out this article about what is going on at the Q.

It is simply amazing to see love in action. Some are saying this love is merely an expression “the human spirit”, but I believe that it is an injection of God’s Spirit!
